Il secolo del teatro

Goethe-Institut Neapel and Napoli Teatro Festival Italia
with the collaboration of the Università degli Studi di Napoli "L'Orientale"

The Napoli Teatro Festival Italia is supporting Il secolo del teatro (The Century of Theatre), a three-year project (2008-2010) organised by the Goethe-Institut in Naples in collaboration with the teaching board of Languages and Genres in Literature, Art and the Performing Arts of the Università "L'Orientale".
In four steps it reconstructs the history of modern theatre, from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day, in the light of the major events that shook and radically altered the face of Europe, in terms of both politics and art. The evolution of modern theatre is also narrated in terms of political events, and major scientific and artistic developments: forging a series of entirely novel links between art, politics, science and society. Each documentary features excerpts of videos, combined with frequent interviews with leading figures and with people bearing witness to their works of the period. The series includes contributions from artists such as Stanislavski, Reinhardt, Brecht, Brook, Strehler, Dario Fo, Thomas Bernhard, Heiner Müller, Robert Wilson, Patrice Chéreau, Peter Stein, Claus Peymann, Ariane Mnouchkine and Peter Handke.
