Napoli Teatro Festival Italia comes to life in 2007. The previous year, the Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali (Ministry for Cultural Assets and Activities) published an announcement for the carrying out of a theatre festival – that every three years – would have taken place in a different Italian city and followed the main European events. At the end of the selection, Naples was chosen as the first venue of the initiative.

In 2009, given the success of the first two editions, the Ministry for Cultural Assets and Activities confirmed Naples as the per- manent venue of the event.
Ever since the first edition, the Festival has been characterized by an inter- national programme: most of the shows are produced, co-produced (with the major European theatres in the world) or commissioned by the Festival that invites Italian and foreign artists to create site specific shows for the city. The city becomes the real focus of the Festival: in fact, along with the historic and innovation theatres, other non-theatrical spaces, such as monumental buildings, full neighbourhoods, churches, art galleries, museums and dis- mantled industrial areas, are turned into stages for shows that will host the June programme.
